Lucca Biennale Cartasia in its tenth edition is pleased to announce the new venues on the occasion of its tenth anniversary:Ex Museo del Fumetto, Ex Cavallerizza, Caseremetta Baluardo di San Paolino, City Center.


Ex Museo del Fumetto:

The "Ex Museo del Fumetto", was reopened and put into operation thanks to Lucca Biennale Cartasia after about ten years of inactivity. This building, with its architecture reminiscent of an old factory, was initially used as a barracks (Caserma Lorenzini). It was then from 2002 to 2010 home to the Muse del Fumetto and the Image of Lucca. In order to combine fantasy, modernity and reality, the Museum has kept for several years original works for fans and curious making the city of Lucca a fundamental center for communication and image.

The recovery of this awesome palace to host the exhibition Indoor is emblematic of the intentions that Lucca Biennale Cartasia: to encourage the enrichment of the artistic landscape-cultural of the city of Lucca and to encourage the cohesive and aware development of Paper Art in the world.

Ex Museo del Fumetto houses the Indoor, Performance, Focus Japan, Fashion section and the ticket office, from 10:00 to 19:00.

Ex Cavallerizza:

The Cavallerizza Ducale of Lucca was built between 1821 and 1823 for government use by the Ministry of Education, who assigned it to the riding school for the riding exercises of the students of the Royal College and the Military Corps of Paggi. The Ex Cavallerizza is an excellent open space exhibition space, ideal for the realization of the works of Lucca Biennale Cartasia and the theater of an R&D center for artists in July.

During the Biennale it hosts the Extra Part of the Biennale in particular: Workshops, the Indoor work of the artist Jonathan Bocca, the Outdoor artwork of the artists Ankon Mitra (Clouds of Illusion) and TOMA! (The Amazon), the Focus Japan artwork of Anna Onesti (The Seeds Alphabet 2017 and 2018), the preparation of the dress of the Performer Davide Francesca, with opening hours 10:00-18:00 starting from August 15.

Caseremetta Baluardo di San Paolino:

In the walls surrounding the city of Lucca, there are numerous buildings that were once used for war and today are used as bars, restaurants or are simply abandoned. One of these buildings is the Casermetta Baluardo San Paolino.

For Lucca Biennale Cartasia 2021 the Casermetta is used to the Edu Lab section, workshops for children to raise awareness of Paper Art and promote manipulative-creative activities.

In this edition take part in the initiative the association Recuperarti and Tourist Guides.

City Center:

The Outdoor Section is the beating heart of the event with monumental cardboard sculptures installed in the historic center of Lucca. The squares concerned are Loggiato Pretorio, Piazza della Cittadella, Piazza Guidiccioni, Piazza San Frediano, Porta dei Borghi, Piazza San Francesco, Piazza Santa Maria, Ex Cavallerizza. Discover for free the artworks installed around the historic center!


The OFF Section involves commercial activities and not, to contribute to the economic revival of the commercial activities of the historic center of Lucca popularize the artistic movement of paper art in places unusual to art but common to the local public. The off section extends from the Baluardo di Santia Maria to Via Buia along the Via di Vittorio Veneto.

This venue hosts the exhibition of models "Papier Maquette" from 6 September to 26 with free entrance with hours:

Monday - Friday 10:00- 15:00.

Saturday 10:00 - 19:00

 - Green Pass

As per national directive, we adapt to the new dpcm DECREE-LAW 6 August 2021, n. 111, from 6 August 2021, excluding minors up to 12 years and exempt persons, is mandatory to exhibit the Green Pass or equivalent certification recognized by the Italian State to access the exhibition Indoor Lucca Biennale Cartasia 2021 within:

- Former Museum of Comics, Piazza S. Romano, 4, 55100 Lucca LU
- Ex Cavallerizza, Via della Cavallerizza, 55100 Lucca LU, Lucca

The Green Pass or equivalent certification must attest to one of the following cases: complete vaccination, administration of the first dose (in cases where the vaccine provides for two), recovery, the negative result of a molecular swab or antigenic rapid swab carried out within 48 hours prior to the visit.

If only the first dose of vaccination has been carried out, the Certification is issued after 14 days of administration and is valid until the maximum time for the next dose.

Lucca Biennale Cartasia 2021, in case of failure to exhibit the green pass, will not access the interior spaces.
